Presented by Immersive Worlds as part of its interactive program at the 2026 Adelaide Fringe, Cathedral Chiaroscuro transforms St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral into a spectacle unlike anything previously seen in Adelaide.
From 8pm on Tuesday through Sunday, visitors gather outside the cathedral before gradually filing into the nave.
Carved stonework and archways are illuminated by the architecturally mapped projections that ripple across the historic Gothic Revival interior.
The term “chiaroscuro”, originating in the Renaissance, is Italian for “light-dark” and refers to the dramatic interplay of light and shadow used in painting, drawing and film — a concept vividly brought to life in this installation.
At the centre of the display are the cathedral’s stained-glass windows, framed by shifting hues of blue, pink and orange that at times resemble watercolour brushstrokes or marbled ink — art within art.
Beyond its captivating visuals, Cathedral Chiaroscuro’s greatest strength lies in its universal appeal.
Its choral and classical compositions transcend age and language; glance away from the projections, and you’ll see visitors, young and old, gazing upward in shared awe.
In today’s climate of global uncertainty, Cathedral Chiaroscuro offers something rare: an almost meditative, ethereal moment of stillness — all within just 20 minutes.
The experience culminates in a stirring rendition of Vivaldi’s Gloria, as flowers and greenery appear to bloom across the Gothic Revival stonework of the nave — a beautiful fusion of art, music and architecture that is not to be missed.
Cathedral Chiaroscuro will hold its final 2026 Adelaide Fringe session at St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral on Sunday, March 22. Tickets are available here.
